Thanks for your support during my campaign for Carlsbad City Council.  In so many ways, this is OUR campaign to make a difference in our town!

Here on this website you'll find my ideas for Carlsbad, my positions on the issues of the day, plus links to articles written by local reporters and much more.  In less than three months, CleanCarlsbad.com has received over 27,000 hits!  Supporters from every continent (except Antarctica) have contacted me.

I'm not putting up plastic signs, and I'm not accepting donations or endorsements.  I'm free from special interest money, pressure, and influence in order to represent you.  I've proven that I share - - and will stand up for - - your priorities.  It's time for you to have a voice on City Council.

Sunday, November 2, during the Carlsbad Village Faire, I'll be at Snyder Art and Design, 2695 State Street, so drop by.  The Village Faire is fun and a great place to find holiday gifts.

Our success depends on grass roots word-of-mouth and voter turnout November 4th.  Tell your friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors in Carlsbad about me, please.

After participating in the City Council candidate debates and forums, I've made clear my positions on the hot topic issues facing Carlsbad.  However, there are many issues that people in Carlsbad talk to me about daily which never made it into the forum question lists or the news coverage.  I'll write a bit about a few of those below.

Many people do not feel much in common with the current leadership.

  • One quarter of the people in Carlsbad are children under 17.
  • Half the adults in Carlsbad are under 45.
  • The other half of the adults are 45 and older, including the mayor, all members of the current City Council, and all five of the other candidates running for City Council.

I'm 19 years old.  My perspective would be a dramatically different shot-in-the-arm for City Council regarding the needs of young people and young families in Carlsbad.  Parks, open space, plus a youth-friendly attitude when planning community events programs, and policies would go a long way toward restoring trust and inspiring involvement.

I really appreciate your follow-up questions and encouraging words after every event, article, and interview, especially when you've understood and appreciated my unorthodox answers and approaches.

For example, the Union-Tribune  recently asked each candidate to name the top two issues that must be addressed.  My answers are unusual when compared to the other candidates - - but based on public reaction - - I believe my answers speak for the majority.

Q:  what are the two most important issues in this race? how would you address each one?

A:  "First, the City Council works for the citizens of Carlsbad, not big campaign donors, not outside developers, not the elite few. I’ve addressed this by refusing donations, endorsements, and gifts. Second, the City Council must be responsive to its employers, the citizens. It’s not cool for the boss to feel enraged and estranged. I’ve been accused of crusading for Alga Norte Park, high technology such as muniWiFi, and Phantom Art Gallery in empty storefronts in the Village. To me, that is high praise. You see, the boss has a real thing for that park, technology, and new events."

(You can find links to many different interviews of the candidates on the main menu or on the Links page.  If you know of one that is mission, please let me know.)

Having safe, healthy activities and gathering places for young people is a top priority for my campaign and should be for Carlsbad city government.   The current council has slated the Orion skatepark for destruction while stalling construction of the Alga Norte Park (and the new skatepark), disregarding the sheer number of skaters in Carlsbad as well as the importance of skating in North County.

Pushing the Council to build Alga Norte Park has been a passion for me long before I entered this race because of the community's need for safe, affordable, healthy recreation areas.  I've been called a "crusader" to end the chronic swim lesson waiting lists.  In addition to the swim complex and skatepark, Alga Norte will have ball fields, basketball courts, a dog park, walking trails, playgrounds, and other fun things for kids, families, and individuals.  It will also be big enough for community events such as sports tournaments and concerts.  I will keep fighting for it!

My opponents' campaigns raised (and so far almost spent) over $250,000 running for City Council.  I've run a lean-and-green campaign for about $100.  Young people and young families tell me every day how concerned they are about the economy and the environment, how much they hate the plastic campaign signs, how skeptical they are about special interest influence on city government.

I was one of two candidates who chose not to use the plastic signs during this campaign.  Carlsbad should ban them, as other cities have.  You can read more about my lean-and-green and carbon-neutral approach on the Issues and FAQ pages here on CleanCarlsbad.com

The vast majority of my ideas are no cost or low cost and would be easy for the City and/or citizens to implement.

Rather than competing against other local golf courses, let's work with them to create Twin City passes to get more local residents and tourists out on the golf course.

Endless complaining about the golf course will not make it more profitable!  Let's make the most of every asset we have.

Artist colonies thrive in other beach cities.  Help build Carlsbad's community of artists and artisans.  Our first step:  Carlsbad Phantom Gallery
